IRISH EXAMINER .. OCTOBER 13TH 2013 ...
Rebecca Storm: Leading Lady By Irene Feighan
Sunday, October 13, 2013
BEHIND brand Rebecca Storm are two leading players: front of house is Rebecca the dazzling singer with a string of hit musical hits — Blood Brothers, Evita and Les Miserables — to her name and backstage is her husband/musical director Kenny Shearer.“I open my mouth and Kenny speaks,” she jokes, adding that they first met at Cork Opera House in 1996, during Blood Brothers. Kenny, a bass player, was part of the orchestra.
Now on “the wrong side of 50”, she shows no sign of slowing down. “You keep striving for things,” she says. ” I feel lucky that I’ve been offered some great roles — and have been the leading lady in every show that I’ve done. I’m very grateful for that. But I’ve had flops as well. I’ve played Joan of Arc — it closed after two weeks. And I’ve had my fair share of bad reviews along with the good ones.”
She would love to do Sunset Boulevard — and get her teeth into the role of Norma Desmond.
“And I’d like to do more concerts like I’m doing at the Everyman and Ballymaloe Grainstore. They are a bit more intimate. A bit less pressurising.”
Born in Yorkshire, she now considers Kildare as home, with her second base being London where her daughter Rebecca Roberts, a singer/songwriter lives.
What shape are you in?
I walk a lot and I sing a lot. I do a bit of yoga. And I sleep a lot — I like to get eight hours.
Do you have any health concerns?
No. I got pneumonia in the late ’80s when I was doing Evita in Cork. On the opening night in Dublin I realised it wasn’t a cold and had to take a week off.
What are your healthiest eating habits?
When I do the Carol Vorderman detox — it’s all about cutting out meat, eggs, bread and milk. It got me on to rice milk. I should do it more than I do.
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Fish and chips. Whenever we’re in Cork we go to Hillbilly’s Fried Chicken. I should have shares in the place — I recommended it to the Blood Brother companies of 2008 and 2011 and they were there every night after the show.
What would keep you awake at night?
Coffee. I used to drink it at night and wonder why I had palpitations.
How do you relax?
I like television — our current favourite is Scott & Bailey — playing sudoku and going to the cinema.
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
I’d like to throw all those girlies into the mix: Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand Goldie Hawn, Jane Fonda — for himself — and Margaret Thatcher, to make it really entertaining.
What is your favourite smell?
My baby’s hair. If you could bring that back that would be great.
When did you last cry?
Usually something on the news — recently it was seeing the children in Syria. We have Sky TV on in the background all day long.
Do you pray?
All the time. I don’t go to church. I used to go to the Baptist church when I was young and I loved it. It was the friendships and the company and the fun. I was encouraged to sing and pushed forward. It gave me quite a lot of confidence.
What would cheer up your day?
If the sun came out today. And my dog — we have a King Charles Cavalier. She’s called Charlie Bear. Even if I get up grumpy I can’t stay that way for very long because she is so bubbly, she just performs for me.

AN EVENING WITH REBECCA STORM .. THE EVERYMAN THEATRE .. CORK .. OCTOBER 13TH 2013 ..
Rebecca Storm, Ireland’s leading lady of musical theatre, the acclaimed star of Blood Brothers, Evita and Les Miserables, makes a very welcome return to Cork City with a concert in The Everyman on Sunday 13 October.
Accompanied by a full band, Rebecca will perform musical theatre classics and personal favourites. An Intimate Evening with Rebecca Storm will include songs from her leading roles in Evita, Les Miserables, Annie, and her anthem tune, 'Tell Me It's Not True' from Blood Brothers.
Over the past thirty years Rebecca has established herself as a hugely versatile star in the West End and Ireland. She is probably best known for her role as Mrs. Johnstone in Blood Brothers, which she first performed in Cork in 1986. Originally cast at age 23, Rebecca was too young to play the Liverpudlian mother of seven, but author Willy Russell was so captivated by her voice that he insisted that make-up artists ‘age’ the young actress. Her portrayal of Mrs. Johnstone has become so popular that she still returns to the role.
Fans of the show will understand when Rebecca says, "Blood Brothers is a very superstitious musical and having been part of it for thirty years, it’s little wonder that some of that has rubbed off. I never put new shoes on the table."
With numerous concerts, radio and TV appearances around the world, Rebecca enjoys a busy and varied career, produced by her husband and musical director, Kenny Shearer.
After many years in London's West End theatre world, Rebecca now lives in Ireland full time where she has the honour of having her handprints set on the famous ‘Gaiety Theatre Walk Of Fame’.

“The Cloak” a newly commissioned stage-show written & directed by Irish artistic Director Pádraig J. Dunne showcases the remarkable life of St. Brigit of Kildare, which can only be described as “Spell Binding”. Pádraig J. Dunne who is known for his unique visionary techniques will include a stunning audio visual presentation as part of the production shot in beautiful locations around Ireland including Glendalough, The Curragh and Brittas Bay. “I am very excited about this project, it’s such an amazing story, it’s a privilege to have the artistic freedom to create my vision, exploring the drama and intrigue that was St. Brigids’ life. We are calling auditions for singers and dancers Ireland wide who would relish the opportunity to be part of this wonderful production, with choreography from Nicole Kavanagh and Musical Direction from Lisa Nagle, the level of talent and professionalism we expect will be phenomenal, add to this the eclectic score, dramatic dance and the on-stage presence of Rebecca Storm this production will please a huge cross section of theatre goers.”
Rebecca Storm (singing and acting the part of St. Brigids’ mother Broicsech) has captivated audiences for over 30 years establishing herself as one of the most popular leading ladies in musical theatre, playing some of the most demanding roles including Eva Peron in ‘Evita’, Fantine in ‘Les Miserables’ and numerous other quality productions said ”I am absolutely delighted to be singing the lead vocal role of Broicsech, in what will be a spectacular production. I love the music that has been chosen to tell the story of “The Cloak” and the dramatic setting of St. Brigids’ Cathedral”.
Both Padraig and Rebecca said that this is an opportunity for talented singers and dancers in Ireland to showcase their talents performing in a unique and original Irish production. Auditions for singers and dancers are to be held on 14th July 2013 at St Josephs Academy in Academy Street Kildare, times are… Dancers 10:00am to 5:00pm… Singers & Actors (including children) 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Anne Brain, Producer explained “The story of St. Brigid is a story of two remarkable women, St. Brigid and her mother Broicsech, both of whom endured extreme hardship, overcame these, did great works and went on to become an inspiration to thousands of people worldwide. With Rebecca Storm singing and acting the part of Broicsech, Pádraig J. Dunne as Director and St. Brigids’ Cathedral as the venue we have the right ingredients to present this story at the high level of professionalism it deserves!
‘the opening music cascades over the Cathedral, performed by the choir, the doors swing open and Celtic clad pirates pour through the doors of the Cathedral waving flags while others pull their ship to shore’ just one of the scenes from the stage-play “The Cloak” showcasing the life of a woman of our time Saint Brigid of Kildare incorporating the best singing and dancing talent on offer in Ireland.
Anne added “We are leaving our options open regarding our male lead, but the selection will enhance an already highly talented supporting cast, a spectacular light and a video production and music that will uplift the soul. It is our intention that “The Cloak” will evolve into one of the best stage-plays ever written and presented in Ireland, showcasing to the world the best quality talent Ireland has to offer”.

Timoleague in West Cork, Ireland is a picturesque village which is situated just 30 miles from Cork City on the Kinsale to Clonakilty coast road (the R600). Perched at the edge of a long sea inlet this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century abbey . The abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga. The name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga).
The village of Timoleague itself, with its many brightly coloured dwellings and businesses, is home to some fine restaurants and pubs. It is also ideally situated to take advantage of some of the many local outdoor activities including walking, sailing, surfing, golf and fishing to name but a few.
In August each year the village hosts the timoleague festival . This ten day harvest festival sees the streets thronged with locals and tourists alike trying to catch a glimpse of the many street activities which are organised for the event. Live street music, pig racing and the fancy dress competitions are among the most popular of these activities. A large marquee is also erected on the village green during the festival with many big name acts performing during the ten day period.
